PaRappa the Rapper ROM is a rhythm game. It follows the story of PaRappa, a young anthropomorphic dog who aspires to become a skilled rapper to win the heart of his crush, Sunny Funny. The game unfolds in six stages, each featuring a different instructor who teaches PaRappa different rap techniques and how to overcome various challenges.
The gameplay of PaRappa the Rapper is unique and innovative for its time. The game utilizes a “call and response” system, where players must press the correct buttons at the right time to follow the beat and keep up with the music. At the beginning of each stage, a rap instructor introduces a song and sings a sequence of buttons that the player must repeat correctly. To succeed, the player needs to synchronize PaRappa’s actions with the music and rhythm. The buttons to be pressed are displayed at the top of the screen, following a track that moves up and down, indicating the rhythm of the music. The player must press the buttons at the exact moment they reach a certain area at the bottom of the screen. The player’s accuracy in keeping up with the music is evaluated based on PaRappa’s performance, ranging from “U Rappin’ Cool” (great performance) to “Awful” (poor performance). The goal is to achieve a high score and advance to the next stages.
