A pinnacle Metroidvania game
It is a 2D Metroidvania game and belongs to the Souls-like genre, referring to the brutal gameplay of From Software’s games like Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne. This is reflected in various systems in Hollow Knight ROM. For example, during your journey, you collect geo, the in-game currency; if you die, you will lose all geo until you find and defeat your own shadow to regain all the lost geo.
Another reason why this is a souls-like game is the extremely difficult encounters with NPCs. When exploring this dark environment, you should be careful when entering new areas because death lurks everywhere. When facing a formidable enemy, you have to learn their attacks; sometimes it takes many lives to do that to win. You are forced to get better very quickly. It is so satisfying to defeat a boss who has killed you many times, and even more satisfying when you meet them again later and conquer them easily, not because you leveled up or have new weapons, but because you have become a better player.
Unlocking new skills and exploring the vast land in the game
As a 2D Metroidvania game, as you play, you will unlock new abilities that allow you to access other areas on the map. This is my first time playing, so I really didn’t know anything about the mechanics that would be introduced. It took me about 5 hours to find the wall sliding and wall jumping abilities. It was really fun because this is one of my favorite mechanics after Super Meat Boy. It turns an extremely difficult combat game into a smart and challenging platformer. Gliding and jumping on areas with lots of vines made me grin immediately. Introducing the mechanic late in the game made the surprise more worthwhile.
