After assuming the role of Empress Emily Kaldwin in the introduction, players can choose to play as either Emily or Corvo Attano (the protagonist of the previous game). Side missions allow for alternative methods of assassination, non-lethal approaches, and ways to complete the main mission. Both characters use swords, pistols, bows, a folding blade, grenades, and mines, all of which are upgradeable.
Upgrades can be purchased from black market shops scattered throughout the levels, and blueprints scattered throughout the levels also allow for new potential upgrades (in New Game Plus games, previously acquired blueprints are converted into additional currency).
